Eligibility for Wood Badge

Wood Badge is advanced leadership training for adult leaders in all of Boy Scouting’s program areas – Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, Venturing, and Sea Scouting – as well as Council and District leaders. This includes assistant leaders, committee members, and “just parents” in all areas.

Leaders are encouraged to attend Wood Badge, there is no minimum tenure requirement.

This is Advanced Training
Since it is advanced training, though, there are some important requirements. You must

  • Be a registered as an adult leader of the Boy Scouts of America, and active in a Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity team, Venturing crew, or a District or Council position.
  • Have completed basic training for the position you currently hold
  • Have a Class 3 physical valid through September, 2004.
  • Have not previously attended a Wood Badge course.
  • Bring your Scouting spirit and a desire to learn and grow in your knowledge of Scouting and yourself. It will be a great experience!

For Those Who Took the “Old” Wood Badge Course

Some of you may have earned your beads under the old Wood Badge course. You may take 21st Century Wood Badge if you have beads from the “old course” if:

  • You agree not to wear your beads during the course,
  • You agree to complete a 21st century wood badge “ticket”

    Basic Training

Since Basic Training was completely revamped in 2001, there has been some confusion about what training is required for Wood Badge.
