In those 9 years, I’ve been a COR, Committee Chairman, Committee Member, Cub Master, District Committee Member at Large, Unit Commissioner, Assistant Scoutmaster for the Centenary World Jamboree in England, and currently, a Committee Member for Troop 39, and the District Commissioner for Ft Dearborn District in the Chicago Area Council. My honors include the Cub Scouter Award, Den Leader Award, Cub Master Award, Scouter Training Knot, Commissioner Arrowhead Honor, and the District Award of Merit. I attended Wood Badge myself in course C-10-02, as a Beaver. A geologist by training, I currently work for the Chicago Department of Environment, and enforce city and State of Illinois environmental laws and regulations.
Gary Boyce – Troop Guide
Scouting has touched me all my life. My father was an ASM at our local Parish. My Mother was the Girl Scout leader. As a Cub Scout in the early 60’s, I advanced to Lion. I took up Scouting again in high school becoming a Medical Explorer at Christ Hospital. When my son was old enough, we joined Cub Scouts, then Boy Scouts, and I have never left, even though my son is now away at school.
I have been happily married for 31 years, and my wife Anne has told me so. My interests are photography, cycling, the History, Discovery, and Sci-fi channels, collecting gadgets, knives and multi-tools, and not completing home improvement projects.
At 16 I took a summer job as a hospital orderly, and have worked in the Health since. I have been a Medical Technologist for 33 years. I supervise a State of Illinois Health Department STD Laboratory, where I use my Wood badge training every day.
I believe in the stewardship of Scouting.
Yolanda Johnson – Troop Guide
“Everyone can be great because everyone can serve. You don’t need a college degree to serve. You don’t even need to make your subject and verb agree to serve… You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love…” These are the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and words in which I try to exemplify.
Being apart of the Boys Scouts of America has given me opportunity to serve. I have met and enjoyed working with many wonderful people at BSA. This experience has helped my son and I to grow and meet the many challenges of scouting.
Pamela R. Galas – Troop Guide
I served as Committee Chairman of Boy Scout Troop 51. During this time, I was part of the core team planning two district camporees hosted by Troop 51. I have recently re-joined Boy Scout Troop 51 as Advancement Chair.
From about 1992 on, I have been a member of the Indian Trails District Committee and assistant district commissioner. I participate in Friends of Scouting presentations, the District Advancement Committee doing Eagle Board of Reviews, the cub scout training team, and day camp staff as the Nature Director. I have been Registration Co-Chairperson for the University of Scouting-Chicago Area Campus since its inception.
I have attended training Lord-Baden Powell University for several years and the University of Scouting – Chicago Area Campus. I received the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award.
For the last two years, I have been a Brownie Girl Scout Leader.
Gunard B. Polite – Troop Guide
I’m presently working as scoutmaster of troop 213 of the Western Trails District and also the Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner of the district. I began in scouting as a scout somewhere around 1956, later moving to a different troop in the 1960’s. That troop folded up in 1965. In 1965 I joined the Sea Explorers before going into the Army in 1967,
In 1978, my son was asked to attend a Cub Scout meeting and we decided to join Pack 3065 of the Prairie Trails District. I became Assistant Webelos Den Lease and later Den Leader. As our son went through Cub Scouting, crossed over to Boy Scouting and joined Troop 6, I moved along with him becoming a Committee Member of Troop 6.
In 1997, the Cubmaster for the pack at my church retired due to health reasons and I was asked by the Church member to take the position because of my scouting background. I had completed all of the necessary training in Pack 3065. After the Cub Scouts crossed over into Boy Scouts in 1999, I took on the position of Scoutmaster.
I completed all of the Scoutmaster Fast Start, and basic outdoor training, attended pow wows and other forms of training to sharpen my skills. In 2002, I took the Woodbadge for the 21st Century which has proven to be very valuable in my scouting career not only for my troop but also for the Western Trails District. I have also completed Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner Training given by the University of Scouting and Lord Baden Powell University. At the present time I’m working to be part of a great staff of scouters, training for Troop Guide, Wood Badge Class C-24-08. I’ve learned so may important ideas about scouting and how to improve the quality of leadership that scouting offers about scout and scouter.
